Adaptive Bitrate streaming offers major advantages for broadcasters and viewers, however the high resource usage places it out of reach for many. Using the Source profile on the Media Control Panel allows you to reduce CPU requirements while still offering a high resolution broadcast.
What is Source Passthrough?
The source passthrough transcoder profile is designed to pass the stream in its native resolution, eliminating the need for resource-intensive transcoding processes. By leveraging this feature, broadcasters can offer higher resolution options—such as 1080p or 720p—without the significant CPU overhead typically associated with transcoding these streams. This not only enhances the viewing experience for audiences but also optimizes resource usage for broadcasters.
Why Use Source Passthrough?
1. Reduced Resource Usage
One of the most compelling reasons to implement source passthrough is the substantial reduction in resource usage. Traditional transcoding processes are very CPU-intensive, often requiring significant computational power to convert streams into various resolutions. By utilizing source passthrough broadcasters can bypass this resource drain, allowing them to allocate their CPU resources more effectively. Reducing the need for transcoding can lead to lower operational costs, making it a financially viable option for many broadcasters.
2. Advantages of ABR Streaming
Adaptive Bitrate (ABR) streaming is a technique that allows for the delivery of multiple stream qualities to accommodate varying network conditions and device capabilities. By integrating source passthrough into an ABR strategy, broadcasters can provide a seamless viewing experience across different devices and bandwidth scenarios. The advantages of ABR streaming include:
- Improved User Experience: Viewers can enjoy uninterrupted streaming, with automatic adjustments to video quality based on their internet connection.
- Wider Audience Reach: By offering multiple resolutions, broadcasters can cater to a broader audience, including those with lower bandwidth connections.
How to Use Source Passthrough
Implementing source passthrough is straightforward and can be accomplished in a few simple steps:
- Stream at 1080p or 720p: Begin by setting up your primary stream at either 1080p or 720p resolution. This will serve as the high-quality option for viewers with sufficient bandwidth.
- Enable Low-Resolution Transcoder Profiles: In addition to your high-resolution stream, enable low-resolution transcoder profiles such as 360p and 480p. This ensures that viewers with limited bandwidth can still access your content without buffering or interruptions.
- Activate Source Profile: Finally, enable the Source profile on Media Control Panel service. This will allow the high-resolution stream to be passed through without transcoding, optimizing CPU usage while maintaining quality.
- Select Configure on your intended service’s side bar
- On the Features/Wowza/Nginx-Rtmp Tab select the 360p, 480p and Passthru profiles
- Select Update Configuration to apply changes.
